- Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs was developed from lecture material for the introductory computer science course of the same name led by Abelson and Sussman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). It aims to give the reader a feel for the elements of style and the aesthetics of programming, and command of the major techniques for controlling complexity in large software systems, techniques that apply whatever the algorithm or language. It teaches that programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for the machine, because computer language is a medium for expressing ideas about how things are done.

- A thorough revision, incorporating hundreds of clarifications drawn from the authors' teaching and colleagues' comments. Chief among its new themes is the role of time in computational models, and the different ways of dealing with it; it adds new sections on concurrency and nondeterminism. Most of the major programming systems in the book were redesigned, and every program example was rewritten to run on any Scheme conforming to the IEEE standard.

- An adaptation by Martin Henz and Tobias Wrigstad, begun at the National University of Singapore in 2008 and used in NUS's introductory course CS1101S from 2012. The adaptation stays close to the original, except in chapter 4: JavaScript programs are not directly data structures the way Scheme programs are, so the chapter now introduces program parsing.
